This blog is an outlet for my life long interest in miniature trains. I received my first train set when I was seven years old and have pretty much been active in the hobby every since then minus deployments to crappy middle or far eastern countries. The major subjects will center around my representation of a freelanced logging railroad set in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The West Side Lumber Company will be a major source of inspiration.
I model in a scale called On30. The ratio of real to miniature is 1 to 48 or 1/4 inch = 1 foot. The track gauge is 30″ or really narrow gauge compared to the typical 4′8 1/2″ of today. There were a few logging and mining railroads using this gauge around the turn of the century. In the model world it has taken off like a wildfire because Bachmann Trains began producing affordable models several years ago. Another benefit of this scale for many is that the trains will run on the very common HO gauge track.
Most of you will be very bored by the detailed commentary surrounding the documentation of my progress, but please feel free to look at the pictures and see how things are coming along. For the few actual model railroaders that stumble in to take a look, welcome! Please feel free to comment and ask questions about how or why I did something.
